Lionel Messi will not face any penalties related to a confrontation aimed at referees following Inter Miami’s 3-0 defeat against LAFC on Saturday, as indicated by the Professional Referee Organization (PRO). This ruling clarifies that Messi did not breach any MLS regulations during the incident.
A video circulated on social media shortly after the match, showing Messi approaching a door suggested to be leading to the referees’ locker room. Teammate Luis Suarez intervened, attempting to pull Messi away. They exited the doorway shortly after, with Suarez trying to calm the situation. Initially, it was uncertain how near Messi was to the referee area, but in a statement from PRO, responsible for officiating in MLS and other U.S. leagues, it was confirmed that Messi did not approach close enough to violate any league rules.
“After discussing with the match officials, we can confirm Lionel Messi did not enter the officials’ locker room,” stated PRO in a release.
After the game, no officials filed complaints against Messi, leading to an investigation that concluded he didn’t enter restricted regions during the event.
In comparison, MLS had previously suspended FC Cincinnati’s Matt Miazga for three matches after he entered the referees’ locker room following a playoff match against the New York Red Bulls due to dissatisfaction with a yellow card that rendered him ineligible for the next game.
Miazga’s suspension was later decreased to two matches.
