Will Jayson Tatum Return to the Celtics This Season?

Speculation grows around Jayson Tatum's possible return from injury, alongside updated betting odds on his first basket this season.

This week, an intriguing market appeared on FanDuel Sportsbook, indicating that Jayson Tatum, the star player for the Celtics, might make a comeback from his injury during the regular season.

On May 12 of the previous year, Tatum suffered a rupture of his right Achilles tendon during the concluding moments of Game 4 in the Eastern Conference semifinals, keeping him out for the remaining playoffs and the current season.

Recently, speculation surrounding Tatum’s return has intensified, leading reporters to inquire about his practice status with Celtics head coach Joe Mazulla.

With rumors escalating, FanDuel has unveiled odds concerning the method by which Tatum will score his first basket of the 2025-26 regular season:

Jayson Tatum’s method of first basket in the 2025-26 regular season

  • 3-point field goal: +190 (wager $10 to win $29 total)
  • Other: +190 (wager $10 to win $29 total)
  • Layup: +380 (wager $10 to win $48 total)
  • Free throw: +470 (wager $10 to win $57 total)
  • Dunk: +1600 (wager $10 to win $170 total)

If Tatum doesn’t take the court this season, all bets will be nullified. However, signs suggest that his return is possible.

Entering the season, several sports betting platforms had the Celtics listed at around +8000 to clinch the NBA championship, likely reflecting Tatum’s absence.

Currently, Boston ranks second in the Eastern Conference with the fourth-best NBA record.

Presently, the team’s championship odds are at +1200 on FanDuel, trailing only the Thunder, Nuggets, and Spurs.

The top team in the East, the Detroit Pistons, are young and currently five games ahead of the Celtics as of February 24. Traditional reasoning implies that should Tatum return, the experienced Celtics would be favored against the Pistons if they were to face off in the playoffs.

Tatum recently practiced with the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G-League affiliate, and is now back with the Celtics, participating in 5-on-5 drills, which he disclosed to reporters this week.

Tatum is a six-time All-Star and four-time All-NBA first-team selection. He averages over 26 points per game for the Celtics in every season for the last five years and played a pivotal role in helping Boston secure an NBA title in 2024.
