U.S. men’s national team defender Sergino Dest suffered a noticeable hamstring injury during PSV’s victory against AZ Alkmaar, which has sparked concerns regarding his readiness for the World Cup next summer.
Dest was on the field for 57 minutes before being taken off for medical attention after falling to the ground. The exact nature and seriousness of his injury remain uncertain, and he was escorted off by the medical team.
On Sunday, Dest shared an update via Instagram stating he would be “out for a little while,” reassuring fans that this was not the end of his season. He emphasized that he would exert all efforts to return ‘ASAP’ at the right timing.
Recognized as one of the USMNT’s primary starters, Dest’s contributions as a wingback, particularly his offensive capabilities, have been invaluable. He recently assisted in a significant 5-1 victory over Uruguay in November, marking his impact on the field.
Dest’s return to the USMNT occurred in September after a long recovery from an ACL tear in 2024, which sidelined him for over a year. This season, he has participated in 35 matches for PSV, contributing two goals and five assists while the team pursues its third consecutive Eredivisie title.
As the USMNT gears up for their upcoming friendlies against Belgium and Portugal, these games will be pivotal in determining the final squad for the World Cup.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has scheduled pre-World Cup matches, including clashes against Senegal and Germany, before the tournament opener against Paraguay. Dest’s presence in these fixtures will be crucial as they navigate through group play, against teams like Australia and contenders from the playoff for the World Cup slot.
