Bayern Munich’s left-back Alphonso Davies is facing a shorter recovery period than expected after being injured in a match against Atalanta. Jesse Marsch, the head coach of Canada’s national team, has shared this optimistic update after directly communicating with Davies about his condition.
Relief for Bayern
The fans at Allianz Arena were anxious when Davies had to leave the field during Bayern’s convincing 6-1 success in the Champions League. There were significant concerns regarding a potentially long absence due to his previous injuries. Thankfully, the assessments show that the injury is not as serious as first thought, with reports suggesting that Davies may have evaded a major tear.
Marsch’s insights on recovery
Marsch has been in contact with Davies and provided a hopeful timeline for his return, noting this setback is minor in comparison to earlier muscle problems the player experienced. He mentioned, “I’ve spoken to him. He’s obviously a little sad and frustrated. But he said that this injury – even compared to the one he had about a month ago – is much less severe. It will probably take him two to three weeks to get back.”
Strategy during international break
Marsch indicated Canada plans to let Davies recover fully by not including him in the squad for the upcoming international matches. “We will probably not call him into the squad in March and leave him in Munich so that he becomes fully fit again. That is ok. I am confident that he will do exactly that,” he added, emphasizing patience given Davies’ past ACL injury in 2025.
Focus on rehabilitation
As it stands, Davies will not participate in the next Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen or the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 versus Atalanta. Given that Bayern currently leads the league, the team aims to continue performing well while Davies focuses on his rehabilitation, ensuring he is at peak fitness for the crucial tail end of the season in their pursuit of a treble.
