Lionel Messi is now the owner of a fifth-division soccer club in Spain after acquiring UE Cornellà, which is located in Barcelona. Messi, celebrated as one of the best players of his time during his two decades with FC Barcelona, has been a significant sports figure, winning numerous titles and awards before moving on in 2021.
Cornellà is a modest establishment situated in a working-class area. The club announced this acquisition without disclosing the financial details. In their statement, the club expressed, “Leo Messi’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s history. The project is guided by a long-term vision and a strategic plan combining ambition, sustainability, and a strong connection to its local roots.”
Founded in 1951, Cornellà has played a role in developing talents such as Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and former Barcelona defender Jordi Alba, who shared the pitch with Messi at Inter Miami.
At 38 years old, Messi aims to participate in the upcoming World Cup this summer in North America, where Argentina will defend their title.
