Mascherano Resigns from Role as Inter Miami Head Coach Four Months Post MLS Triumph
In a surprising decision, Javier Mascherano has stepped down as head coach of Inter Miami just months after clinching the MLS Cup.
Javier Mascherano is no longer the head coach of Inter Miami, marking an unexpected change just four months after steering Lionel Messi’s team to the MLS Cup victory. The club announced that Mascherano is stepping down due to personal reasons. His entire coaching staff will also depart, though the specifics remain undisclosed.
Taking over in the interim is Guillermo Hoyos, a figure notable for having recognized Messi’s extraordinary potential during his time at Barcelona’s academy. Hoyos is now tasked with leading a team currently holding a 3-1-3 record in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer.
Mascherano reminisced, “I would like to thank the club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments.”
This shift occurs shortly after Inter Miami commenced operations at its new stadium near Miami International Airport, having drawn ties in its first two matches at the venue. Alberto Marrero, the chief soccer officer, will take on the responsibilities of sporting director moving forward.
Managing owner Jorge Mas expressed gratitude for Mascherano’s contributions, stating, “Javier will forever be part of this club’s history. We respect his decision and are deeply grateful for everything he contributed.”
