Ancelotti Hints at Thiago Silva’s Potential Recall for Brazil's World Cup Squad

Carlo Ancelotti does not dismiss the possibility of veteran Thiago Silva returning to the national team ahead of the World Cup despite his age.

Carlo Ancelotti has hinted at the possibility of a remarkable return for veteran defender Thiago Silva to the Brazil national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup. Even though Silva is now 41 years old, Ancelotti believes that the defender’s experience and skill are far more significant than age.

Age is just a number for Ancelotti

Thiago Silva hasn’t played for the Selecao since their tragic quarter-final exit against Croatia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. With the next global tournament nearing, Ancelotti’s comments have ignited rumors of Silva possibly making a final appearance on the international stage.

The former Real Madrid manager praised Silva, who joined Porto in January and has played nine matches for them. In a recent interview with French outlet L’Equipe, Ancelotti emphasized that age is not a barrier if a player continues to perform at the highest level. He pointed to his current midfield star at Bernabeu as an example of longevity in modern football.

The Modric and Maldini blueprints

Ancelotti, familiar with coaching legendary figures who defy age, mentioned players he’s managed at AC Milan and Real Madrid to validate a potential return for Silva. He expressed his belief that talent does not expire as long as a player maintains their physical fitness.

The Brazil coach articulated his philosophy, stating, “I never look at the date of birth on the passport. All Brazilian players can aspire to be on the list for the World Cup. It doesn’t matter if he is 41 years old. If he deserves to be there, he will be. Age is not a problem. Take Paolo Maldini, who was nearly 39 when he lifted a Champions League trophy, or Luka Modric, who is 40 today.”

A future on the touchline

Beyond his playing career, Ancelotti also mentioned Thiago Silva’s strategic mindset towards the game. Silva has started preparing for his post-playing career, having shared with ESPN his ambitions to acquire coaching credentials. Ancelotti believes that Silva will transition into coaching seamlessly due to his tactical acumen and strong work ethic.

He confidently predicted that once Silva decides to retire, he would be an excellent coach, stating, “Thiago will be a great coach, of that I have no doubt. He has experience, having worked with brilliant coaches throughout his career, and not just me,” he said with a smile. “And he works very hard… I’m glad to know I’ve inspired some of them…”

The final push for World Cup glory

With Brazil aiming to secure their sixth world title, having a seasoned professional like Silva could offer the guidance and calm needed during crucial matches. Although the squad incorporates rising young talent, Ancelotti acknowledged that the infusion of fresh players has heightened uncertainties in finalizing the lineup, leaving room for experience to play an essential role.

If selected, Silva would set a record as one of the oldest players in World Cup history. For now, he remains a viable candidate in Ancelotti’s eyes, demonstrating that high performance levels can keep alive the dream of donning the yellow and green of Brazil, irrespective of age.
