Kahn’s Perspective on Neuer’s Future
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Oliver Kahn expressed that Manuel Neuer should consider retiring if Bayern Munich manages to clinch the Champions League trophy this season. Kahn, a legendary former goalkeeper, questioned whether Neuer, now aged 40, needs to endure a final World Cup run.
Kahn’s Advice
Kahn articulated, “Is that now not the perfect time to take all the titles with Bayern again and then really exit at the very highest point? Do I still need a World Cup in the USA with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees? Those are the thoughts I think he is pondering right now.”
He continued to emphasize the importance of exiting at the pinnacle of one’s career, hinting that if Neuer wins the Champions League again, it would be a fitting end, noting, “He is already a world champion. Saying ‘That was it now’ is also an art for an athlete.”
Challenges for Neuer’s World Cup Return
Amidst the speculation regarding Neuer’s international career, Didi Hamann boldly stated that he would not include Neuer in the squad for the 2026 World Cup. Hamann criticized coach Julian Nagelsmann’s management, arguing that it focuses too heavily on strategy rather than the crucial mentality required for success in significant tournaments.
Kahn and Hamann’s insights shed light on the mounting pressures surrounding Neuer’s decision as Germany prepares for the 2026 campaign, hoping to reclaim their former glory after two disappointing exits in 2018 and 2022. The team is set to face a manageable group that features Ecuador, Ivory Coast, and Curacao.
