Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward has faced considerable criticism for his decision to sit out in the second half of the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Just prior to claiming the prestigious Davey O’Brien Award as the leading collegiate quarterback, Ward voiced his thoughts on the scrutiny, saying:
“OK, you’re either going to draft me or you’re not. If you don’t draft me, that’s your fault. You’ve got to remember you’re the same team that’s got to play me for the rest of my career, and I’ll remember that.”
(Translation: “You must remember that you will play against me for the remainder of my career, and I will remember this moment.”)
In the game, which ended with Miami losing 42-41 to Iowa State, Ward managed to set a record for the most career passing touchdowns between FCS and FBS levels at 158 in the first half.
Ward completed 12 of 19 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns before leaving the game. His decision has been a tough but necessary move for him and the program. “It was a hard decision, especially when other teammates also contemplated their futures.”
His collegiate achievements culminated in a total of 18,189 passing yards and 158 touchdowns across his tenures at Incarnate Word, Washington State, and Miami. His yardage only follows those of notable quarterbacks like Case Keenum and Dillon Gabriel.
While Ward is still contemplating his participation at the NFL Scouting Combine, he confirms he will showcase his skills at Miami’s Pro Day.
