Atalanta Forward Ademola Lookman Responds to Harsh Penalty Criticism from Manager Gasperini
Ademola Lookman defends himself after Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini called him one of the worst penalty takers, following a recent Champions League exit.
Ademola Lookman has retaliated after his manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, labeled him as “one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen” following the team’s exit from the Champions League against Club Brugge.
After trailing 3-0 in the first half, Atalanta lost 3-1 in the match, leading to a 5-2 aggregate defeat. Lookman was subbed in during the second half and quickly scored a goal; however, his missed penalty and a red card for teammate Rafael Toli shifted the game in Brugge’s favor.
Gasperini expressed dissatisfaction post-match, stating:
“He shouldn’t have taken the penalty. He’s one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen. The designated takers should have been Charles De Ketelaere and Mario Retegui, but apparently Lookman was euphoric after scoring and then took the penalty, which wasn’t a nice gesture.”
In response, Lookman stated on social media:
“Being singled out in the manner I have been not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful, not least because of the immense hard work and commitment I have always put in each and every day to help bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.”
He also mentioned enduring many difficult moments in silence, emphasizing the importance of protecting the team as a whole. Lookman added that the criticism from Gasperini was particularly painful given his dedication to the club.
Despite the setback, Atalanta is eager to secure a Champions League spot by finishing in Serie A’s top four, striving for more than just participation on the European stage.
