Luis Rubiales Convicted of Sexual Assault on Jenni Hermoso During Women's World Cup

Luis Rubiales has been convicted of sexually assaulting Spanish soccer player Jenni Hermoso, gaining media attention and igniting debates about athlete safety.

Luis Rubiales, the disgraced former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, was found guilty in a Madrid court of sexually assaulting Spain player Jenni Hermoso when he forcibly kissed her at the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. He will be appealing the decision, according to Reuters.

The judge acquitted him of coercion, and he did not receive jail time, despite the request from prosecutors for a two-and-a-half year prison sentence. Three others, including ex-coach Jorge Vilda, were also cleared of coercion charges.

Rubiales has been ordered to pay over $13,000 in penalties and is prohibited from approaching Hermoso within 200 meters for a year.

Judge Jose Manuel Clemente Fernandez-Prieto stated, “This action of kissing a woman on the lips has a clear sexual connotation and is not the way people greet those with whom they are not in an emotional relationship.”

Rubiales kissed Hermoso during the trophy ceremony in Sydney, Australia, where Spain celebrated its historic win over England. Hermoso remarked that the incident tainted a day that should have been one of the happiest of her life.

Rubiales has 10 days to appeal the court’s ruling.
