NBA Chief Adam Silver Addresses 3-Point Shooting Concerns: 'We're on It'

Adam Silver discusses the 3-point shooting issues in the NBA and plans for potential adjustments to the line amid ongoing league transformations.

The NBA is experiencing an impressive level of talent, but there are ongoing discussions about enhancing the visual appeal of games, especially concerning the league’s ratings.

Could adjusting the 3-point line contribute to this goal?

Commissioner Adam Silver addressed this on Wednesday’s episode of The Herd, discussing the league’s considerations about potentially relocating the 3-point line.

“I recognize that to the extent that offenses start to look very similar, we lose [distinct team identities],” Silver stated. He emphasized the transformation within the league, noting how players like Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic are redefining traditional roles.

“I don’t want to knee-jerk move the 3-point line. We’re examining how players adapt to the new rules and determining necessary adjustments.”

Silver challenged the notion that the 3-point line needs to be extended, admitting discussions are ongoing.

“Moving the 3-point line back could congest the area under the basket, resulting in less appealing basketball,” he elaborated.

“I assure you, we are on it. It’s a fixable issue… we will tweak it.”

Currently, the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics, lead the league with an average of 49.4 attempts from beyond the arc, while the Denver Nuggets register the lowest at 31.1 attempts.

Silver highlighted the competitive nature of the NBA, claiming, “We’ve had six different teams winning championships over the last six years. We sell competition, and now every market is competitive.”

The league showcases an impressive balance of power among teams, with Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder leading their respective conferences, affirming the league’s dynamic and competitive landscape.
