Tony Meola, the former goalkeeper for the U.S. men’s national team, was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack on his 56th birthday. Despite this serious health scare, Meola is reportedly in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, as conveyed by MLS reporter Tom Bogert.
“Hey everybody. Just spoke with the legend Tony Meola… he suffered a heart attack last night. He’s in good spirits and doctors say he’ll be okay. He thanks everyone for the birthday wishes too. His biggest message, he wants to stress to us all: ‘Go get frequent check ups.’” — Tom Bogert
Currently working as an analyst for CBS Sports Golazo Network, Meola boasts an impressive playing career spanning 18 years and includes time as a manager for the Jacksonville Armada. He earned 100 caps with the USMNT and played in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, as well as being part of the 2002 squad. Alongside his national team achievements, he was also celebrated during his club career, particularly with Sporting Kansas City.
Meola urges all to prioritize health check-ups to avoid similar health incidents in the future.
