Joel Embiid Remains on the Bench as 76ers Fall to Nets in Close Match

The Philadelphia 76ers' championship aspirations take a hit with another loss, this time to the Brooklyn Nets, as Joel Embiid sits out the fourth quarter.

Joel Embiid got benched and the 76ers got defeated at the buzzer.

A season packed with championship hopes has devolved into a series of disappointments for the 76ers. The latest came against Brooklyn on Saturday night when they succumbed to their seventh consecutive loss, ending in a buzzer-beating tip-in—with Embiid left on the bench.

A two-time NBA scoring champion, the frequently injured Embiid was sidelined for the entire fourth quarter during the close loss of 105-103, after putting up just 14 points in 31 minutes. He missed all six of his 3-point attempts and was out of the play in the final quarter while the 76ers made a rally from 17 points down.

Embiid had recently signed a three-year, $193 million contract extension in September but declined to comment on the game.

He has struggled with injuries all season and appeared slow after losing the ball toward the end of the third quarter. Earlier this week, Embiid noted a need to “fix the problem” in his left knee.

“The way I was playing a year ago is not the way I’m playing right now,” Embiid mentioned. (Translation: La manera en que estaba jugando el año pasado no es la forma en que estoy jugando ahora.)

Coach Nick Nurse indicated he chose to bench Embiid in the fourth because the players on the court—including big man Guerschon Yabusele—were performing well.

“They had a good feel for the game at that point. Just wanted to let them roll with it,” Nurse said. (Translation: Tenían una buena sensación del juego en ese momento. Solo quería dejarlos jugar.)
