Zion Williamson Receives One-Game Suspension From Pelicans for Repeated Lateness
New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson faces a one-game suspension due to consistent tardiness to team activities.
The New Orleans Pelicans have placed power forward Zion Williamson on a one-game suspension for their upcoming match against the Philadelphia 76ers due to repeated violations of team policies pertaining to punctuality.
Williamson has consistently shown up late for various practices and travel plans this season, resulting in this disciplinary action.
“There have been multiple instances that led to this decision,” remarked Willie Green, Pelicans head coach, prior to the matchup with the 76ers.
Williamson, who has experienced more injury-related absences than appearances since being drafted first overall out of Duke in 2019, has participated in only seven out of New Orleans’ 38 games this season. The team has a record of 2-5 with him, and 5-26 without him.
In a public apology, Williamson expressed his regret to team owner Gayle Benson and the entire franchise regarding his tardiness.
“I accept full responsibility for this suspension. I’ve worked incredibly hard in recovery to contribute to the team. There is no excuse for being late to team events. I apologize to Mrs. Benson, my teammates and coaches, and to the fans as well. I will strive to improve as a teammate and a member of this organization,” he stated.
Williamson recently made headlines for his impressive return to play following a lengthy absence, showcasing his skills through an extraordinary dunk against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In addition to Williamson, the Pelicans will also be missing Herb Jones, who is sidelined indefinitely due to a shoulder injury. Jones has missed several games earlier this season because of this same injury, returning on December 5 to start 16 consecutive contests before his latest setback.
