Lakers Coach Reflects on Loss and Community Resilience After Wildfire Devastation

JJ Redick speaks about his family's loss due to a wildfire and the community's response to the tragedy.

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has confirmed that his family lost their home in a devastating wildfire in Pacific Palisades earlier this week.

Redick became emotional during a press conference on Friday, addressing the impact of the wildfire for the first time. The Lakers are set to play against San Antonio on Saturday.

“I’m not sure that I’ve wept or wailed like that in several years,” Redick stated.

The rented home burned down while Redick was traveling with the team in Dallas. Thankfully, Redick’s wife, Chelsea, and their two sons were out of the area during the incident. Redick returned to Pacific Palisades on Wednesday to see the aftermath of the fire.

“I was not prepared for what I saw,” Redick said. “It’s complete devastation and destruction. I saw the neighborhood almost completely gone. You can never truly prepare for something like this. Our home is gone.”

Redick expressed his sadness over the loss of community spaces that had meant a lot to his family as they settled into the area since he took the head coaching role last summer. A recreation center where he spent time coaching his sons is also lost.

The Redicks were renting the property while deciding where to permanently reside in Los Angeles.

“Everything important to us over nearly two decades was in that house,” Redick reflected. “Some things can never be replaced. It’s an awful feeling to lose your home.”

Despite the tragedy, the Lakers aim to provide a sense of normalcy and distraction for the city.

Lakers guard Austin Reaves mentioned, “It’s been sad. I’ve grown to love this city since I arrived. The devastation has been tragic. But I believe LA will come through this because it’s a resilient place.”

In light of the fires, the NFL has relocated the Los Angeles Rams playoff game to Glendale, Arizona, and several games have been postponed, including the Lakers’ upcoming match against Charlotte.
