Utah Parts Ways with Coach Craig Smith Amid NCAA Tournament Struggles

Craig Smith's tenure at Utah ends after failing to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament, prompting the search for a new head coach.

The University of Utah has decided to part ways with its men’s basketball head coach Craig Smith as the team struggles this season. The Utes have fallen short of making it to the NCAA Tournament, and this decision comes with only four games remaining in the regular season.

The firing of Smith is notable given that, despite some promising wins, the Utes are currently not in contention for the NCAA Tournament. Last week, they achieved victories against strong teams like Kansas and Kansas State but suffered a loss to UCF.

Assistant Josh Eilert will step in as the interim coach as the Utes complete their season. Smith leaves with a record of 65-62 at Utah, failing to secure a spot in the NCAA tournament during his time.

“I want to thank Craig for his work and commitment since he arrived in Salt Lake City. He has led us to special moments and memorable victories, and Craig has poured his heart into building our current team,” said Athletic Director Mark Harlan in a statement. He emphasized the aspirations of the program to compete for NCAA Tournament spots regularly.

Additionally, Smith’s tenure faced challenges, including a lack of NIL support for the program.

The Utes are now one of five power-conference openings, joining notable teams like Florida State and Indiana.
