Kirby Smart Jokes that Johnny Manziel was the 'Fireball Champion'

Georgia coach Kirby Smart playfully pokes fun at Johnny Manziel during a coaching clinic, highlighting his past as a notorious partier.

During a recent coaching clinic appearance, Georgia’s Head Coach, Kirby Smart, humorously targeted Johnny Manziel, the former Heisman Trophy winner, referring to him as the ‘Champion of Fireball.’ Smart’s presentation featured images of famous quarterbacks including Joe Burrow, Bryce Young, Cam Newton, and Manziel. When assessing the similarities among these players, the audience emphasized that they all won the prestigious Heisman award. However, one audience member quipped about their championship titles, leading Smart to jest back:

“Champion of what? Champion of Fireball?”
(Translation: Smart jokingly acknowledged Manziel’s notorious partying reputation.)

This comment referenced Manziel’s controversial legacy during his tenure at Texas A&M, where he frequently made headlines for his wild nights out. Notably, he was even arrested his second year at the university and faced a suspension in 2013.

In highlighting their past matchups, Smart pointed out that Manziel had significant performances against his defenses, contributing to Texas A&M’s rise in competitive standings during its entry into the SEC. Notably, he posted impressive stats in their 2012 and 2013 games against Alabama, securing a long-lasting legacy in college football.
