Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has been accused of racism by the Turkish side Galatasaray following comments made during a post-match conference. The heated derby against Fenerbahce ended in a 0-0 draw, but Mourinho’s use of the word “monkeys” while describing the actions of the opposing bench has stirred significant controversy.
In recent weeks, tensions have escalated with both clubs publicly exchanging accusations of impropriety. Galatasaray has expressed intent to initiate criminal proceedings against Mourinho for his remarks, calling them “unequivocally inhumane”.
Mourinho spoke about the reactions of the opposing technical staff during the match and expressed his gratitude towards the referee, Slavko Vincic, stating:
“I went to the referees’ dressing room after the game. Of course, the fourth official was there, a Turkish referee. I told Vincic, ‘Thank you [for coming] here because you come for a big match and you are responsible for a big match’. And I turned myself to the fourth official and I said ‘This match, if you are the referee, this match would be a disaster.’”
The subsequent remarks about the Galatasaray bench jumping “like monkeys” have led to their immediate condemnation. Mourinho’s statements have created an uproar, prompting Galatasaray to release an official statement regarding their planned legal actions.
