Tracking Alex Ovechkin's Quest for Gretzky's Record

Ovechkin closes in on Gretzky's all-time NHL goals record with a remarkable scoring pace.

Alex Ovechkin, star of the Washington Capitals, is renowned in NHL history. The forward is currently 12 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 goals. He recently netted his 883rd goal against the Calgary Flames after achieving his 32nd career hat trick earlier in the week against the Edmonton Oilers.

Ovechkin’s goal tally puts him in a great position to potentially surpass Gretzky by this season’s end, needing only 12 more in the remaining 24 games. Despite scoring 31 goals this year, it’s his lowest total in a full season since the 2012-13 season, where he netted 32.

Ovechkin has accumulated 1,597 points (883 goals and 714 assists) thus far in his career and boasts an NHL record for having at least 30 goals in 18 seasons, surpassing Mike Gartner’s previous record of 17.

CBS Sports will continuously update on Ovechkin’s progress as he aims to achieve this monumental milestone.
