Gavi Praises Lamine Yamal as the World's Second-Best Player after Messi

Barcelona's young star Lamine Yamal receives high praise from teammate Gavi, highlighting his incredible skills and contributions to the team.

When Lamine Yamal skillfully navigated past two Real Madrid defenders to score, it invoked nostalgia reminiscent of Lionel Messi in a Barcelona jersey.

He may still wear dental braces, but this teenage talent has undoubtedly become a key challenge for opponents with his speed, creativity, and stunning goals from Messi’s previous position on the right wing.

Yamal has been remarkable in back-to-back five-goal matches for Barcelona. He spearheaded the team to a 5-2 victory over Madrid in the Super Cup final and contributed to a 5-1 humiliation of Real Betis in the Copa del Rey.

However, it’s not just about scoring; Yamal’s elegance with the ball has led to comparisons to Messi. Much like Messi, he effortlessly dribbles past defenders who always appear just a beat too slow, showcasing an incredible scoring finesse, both with powerful shots from distance and delicate finishes as seen in his match against Madrid.

“After Lionel Messi, he is our best player,” Barcelona’s midfield star Gavi remarked following Yamal’s stellar performance, where he not only scored the final goal but also provided an assist during the rout over Betis.

Yamal has shattered records for youthful talent, becoming La Liga’s youngest goal scorer at 16. He also earned the title of Spain’s youngest scorer during last summer’s European Championship, where he netted the tournament’s goal of the competition in the semifinals, ultimately assisting his team in clinching the trophy against England.

This season, he leads La Liga with nine assists out of his total of 13 assists, alongside nine goals across all competitions.

Yamal’s influence extends to facilitating opportunities for his attack partners, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha, who have combined to tally 46 goals. His passing acumen enhances the team’s attack, and he frequently draws double coverage, creating space for his teammates.

“I have enjoyed Lamine for years; now everyone else appreciates him too. He deserves all the recognition he’s receiving,” asserted center-back Pau Cubarsí, another young talent for Barcelona.

Cubarsí credited the winter break for Barcelona’s strong start to 2025 after the team faced a rough spell in late November and December, encountering unexpected defeats at home.

Currently, Barcelona is positioned six points behind Atletico Madrid in the league, holding third place, while Madrid sits at second, just one point ahead.

Barcelona will face Getafe on Saturday and will follow up with a Champions League group stage match against Benfica in Portugal three days later, as they aim to reclaim their position, trailing only Liverpool in the standings.
