Possible Destinations for Deebo Samuel After Trade Request

Deebo Samuel may be on the move as the 49ers grant him permission to seek a trade for the final year of his contract.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is likely to be traded this offseason. During the NFL Scouting Combine this week, 49ers general manager John Lynch confirmed that the Niners are going to honor Samuel’s trade request.

The team had considered trading Samuel prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, and both he and his agent Tory Dany were granted permission to seek a new team for 2021’s first-team All-Pro this winter, as confirmed by CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones.

“It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle Shanahan because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel noted earlier this month. “But I have to do what’s best. I’m grateful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but I think it’s best that we find another team.”

Samuel’s performance has waned in 2024, with only 51 catches and 670 yards receiving. Despite a career low in rushing as well, he remains a significant asset who can stretch the field.

Potential Landing Spots

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers: Though interested in trading for teammate Brandon Aiyuk, the Steelers need someone with Samuel’s versatility to aid their offense.
  2. New England Patriots: With quarterback Drake Maye entering a crucial phase, adding Samuel could bolster the Patriots’ skill positions.
  3. Washington Commanders: As they prepare to free up cap space, the Commanders need a proven receiver to take pressure off Terry McLaurin.
  4. Denver Broncos: This team might consider bolstering their ranks around rookie quarterback Bo Nix.
  5. Los Angeles Chargers: With the sixth-most cap space available, the Chargers could heavily utilize Samuel alongside quarterback Justin Herbert.
