Ahead of the Concacaf Nations League semifinals kicking off on March 20 on Paramount+, coaches of Canada, Mexico, and Panama participated in a media panel previewing the event along with Oguchi Onyewu from the U.S. team.
Jesse Marsch, the American coach for Canada, made pointed remarks about Trump’s comments suggesting Canada would become the 51st state.
Trump has alluded to this scenario since his re-election, which has been referenced during international competitions, especially following Canada’s recent win against Team USA in a championship match.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remarked post-victory:
“You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.”
Marsch added:
“If I have one message to our president, it’s to lay off the ridiculous rhetoric about Canada being the 51st state. I’m ashamed of the arrogance and the disregard that we’ve shown one of our historically oldest, strongest and most loyal allies…”
He emphasized that these international tournaments now hold added significance for Canada, highlighting the team’s diversity and pride in representing their country.
Onyewu responded to Marsch’s remarks by focusing on U.S. preparations for the nations’ competition, reiterating their aim to retain their title.
Javier Aguirre, coach of Mexico, commented on Trump’s actions, reinforcing the importance of respect and gratitude towards immigrants, aligning with the values that Canada embodies.
