Spring training’s arrival means, among other things, that this is the time of the year when everyone tries to guess who will make their favorite team’s Opening Day roster. With due respect to the veterans in each camp trying to make the cut, the real fun with these exercises concerns top prospects – especially now, with the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement introducing incentives for teams to carry their best youngsters into Opening Day.
Tier 1: Better than 50/50 chance
-
Kristian Campbell, UTL, Boston Red Sox
- The standout of last minor league season with improvements to his swing and bat speed.
-
Matt Shaw, 3B, Chicago Cubs
- His chance opened up due to team changes, but an injury might delay his debut.
-
Colson Montgomery, SS, Chicago White Sox
- A disappointing season has not deterred his chances due to limited competition at his position.
Tier 2: It just depends
-
Christian Moore, INF, Los Angeles Angels
- His potential relies on the current roster’s health.
-
Bubba Chandler, RHP, Pittsburgh Pirates
- The recent trades complicate his chances.
-
Drake Baldwin, C, Atlanta Braves
- Dependent on starting catcher Sean Murphy’s health.
Tier 3: The odds aren’t great
-
Jacob Melton, OF, Houston Astros
- Current roster complexity complicates his immediate chances.
-
Bryce Eldridge, 1B, San Francisco Giants
- Despite being rushed last season, he may not be ready yet.
-
Dalton Rushing, C/OF, Los Angeles Dodgers
- High talent but currently stuck behind established players.
