Abdul Carter's Foot Injury Poses Risks Ahead of the NFL Draft

Top NFL Draft prospect Abdul Carter is facing a critical decision regarding surgery after being diagnosed with a foot injury.

Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter is seen as a standout for the 2025 NFL Draft, but a recent medical evaluation raises concerns about his future stock. Tests conducted at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis revealed that Carter is dealing with a stress reaction in his right foot and is contemplating surgery.

„There are mixed opinions on whether he needs surgery, and we will figure that out soon,” says Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Carter might have to undergo a procedure involving a screw insertion in his foot, leading to an eight-week recovery period. Alternatively, he could opt-out of surgery and prepare for his Pro Day, showcasing his wellness to prospective teams. His family and agents have consulted various doctors for tailored advice.

A decision about surgery is anticipated this week.

„At worst, we don’t foresee this affecting his draft position. After meetings with teams, I believe he will emerge as the No. 1 overall pick,” Rosenhaus confirms.

In 2024, Carter was a unanimous All-American during his junior year, leading the FBS in tackles for loss and ranking third in pressures and sacks. As of now, he occupies the second position in CBS Sports’ prospect rankings, trailing only behind Colorado’s Travis Hunter.

Carter had plans to abstain from workouts at the combine due to a shoulder injury encountered during Penn State’s Fiesta Bowl victory against Boise State. He is hopeful to participate in Pro Day on March 28, provided he recovers from the injury sufficiently.

In prior conversations with the media, Carter expressed his ambition to be the top draft pick:

„I believe I’m the best player in the country, and that it’s only right for the best player to be selected first,” he stated on CBS Sports HQ.

Carter’s professional future hangs in the balance, with significant attention focused on his health decisions.
