Gregg Popovich, the esteemed coach of the San Antonio Spurs, announced on Thursday that he will not be returning for the season after suffering a stroke last November. This marks an uncertain period for the organization as he focuses on his health.
In Popovich’s words:
“Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job and the resolve and professionalism the players have shown… has been outstanding. I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future.”
The stroke occurred at the Frost Bank Center prior to a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Nov. 2, and he had been receiving treatment since this incident. Assistant coach Mitch Johnson has taken on the role of interim head coach during this time.
