The 2024 schedule is wrapped up for the United States men’s national team, but the era under coach Mauricio Pochettino is just beginning.
Since his appointment in September, Pochettino has continuously emphasized his goal: using the October and November international windows to evaluate his player pool and the current staff. This process is still in progress.
However, there’s a significant amount we can learn from Pochettino’s first four matches, especially the two impressive victories over Jamaica that secured the U.S. a spot in the semifinals of the 2024-25 Concacaf Nations League.
Here are the five biggest winners from the Argentine’s initial two camps.
Tim Ream, CB, Charlotte FC
At 37, Ream could be the standout winner. His future on the USMNT seemed uncertain after former coach Gregg Berhalter’s dismissal post-Copa América, which might have prompted the new coach to opt for a fresh start. Instead, Pochettino started Ream in all four matches and appointed him captain, showing his trust in the veteran.
Pochettino praised Ream’s leadership, stating, “I’m a coach who appreciates experienced players. The character he possesses is ideal for guiding young players. He’s calm and has been incredibly helpful on and off the field.”
Ream isn’t taking his role lightly and said, “Being given the confidence that you belong is great. I’ve loved playing for Pochettino since day one. As long as they want me, I’ll be there.”
Ricardo Pepi, ST, PSV Eindhoven
With injuries sidelining Folarin Balogun, Josh Sargent, and Haji Wright, Pepi had a golden opportunity to establish himself as a starter, and he excelled, scoring in both fixtures, including a crucial goal in Kingston.
“I was ready for these opportunities, and I took them,” said the 21-year-old. “The aim is to establish myself. I recognize there’s room for improvement, but I’m also performing well.”
Tanner Tessmann, CM, Olympique Lyonnais
Initially omitted from the October squad, Tessmann was called up after Johnny Cardoso’s injury. He made a significant impact coming off the bench against Panama and started in November.
Pochettino bestowed praise on the 23-year-old for his outstanding game performance and noted, “He’s young, but an immense talent. I anticipate he will get more playtime in Lyon and support us.”
Mark McKenzie, CB, Toulouse
In light of Chris Richards’ injury in October, McKenzie became Pochettino’s preferred partner for Ream in central defense, maintaining his spot even when Richards returned.
Pochettino expressed satisfaction with McKenzie, and Ream acknowledged his growth, emphasizing McKenzie’s eagerness to learn and the confidence he carries now.
Joe Scally, RB, Borussia Mönchengladbach
Scally has shined on the USMNT since 2022 but has faced challenges due to competition from Sergiño Dest. However, with Dest injured, Scally has excelled since Pochettino’s arrival.
Antonee “Jedi” Robinson remarked on Scally’s adaptability under Pochettino’s system and his potential for growth as a player.
