La Liga president, Javier Tebas, today claimed that the league is “on the right path” to addressing its racism crisis following the latest incident of abuse aimed at Vinicius Junior.

The Brazilian was subjected to racist monkey chants during Wednesday’s Copa del Rey semifinal against Real Sociedad. The match was briefly halted due to insults directed at Madrid’s center back Raul Asencio.
A screen displayed a message to attendees: “No to racist, xenophobic and intolerant chants. Encourage the team while respecting the rival.”
This incident adds to a troubling trend in La Liga, with Vinicius Junior reportedly facing 16 racism-related incidents. Supports of Real Madrid and the league have called for stronger measures.
Tebas, addressing the incident, emphasized that the organization is making strides: “There was one incident with a very small group of people. We do a lot more than what is seen in public.”
He stated, “We’re on the right path… to eradicate this behavior. We want to ensure that all football fans can enjoy the game without facing such abuse.”
In previous rulings against abusive behavior, several fans have already faced legal consequences, reflecting a crackdown on racism in football.
