With the conclusion of the 2022 NWSL Championship in Washington, D.C., excitement for the upcoming 2023 season quickly escalated. Fans eagerly anticipated news about future players and new jersey designs.
However, Nike and the NWSL’s creative teams were already focused on the 2025 designs. The meticulous process of creating jerseys takes about two years and involves extensive research, development, and testing.
“We started this process earlier than ever with Nike,” explained Amedea Tassinari, Angel City’s creative director. “By the time we received the briefing template from Nike, we already had our five-year plan in place.”
The briefing process delves into brand positioning, player needs, city characteristics, and team traditions. Each club submits mood boards and additional documents to help Nike understand the cultural significance behind the designs. For instance, the Houston Dash emphasizes their connection to the city’s space heritage in their new jersey, while Angel City aims to represent Los Angeles in a profound, authentic manner.
Similarly, Tassinari stated, “Los Angeles is more than just Hollywood; it’s a city with many unique hearts.”
As the jerseys transition from design to production, athletes’ input remains invaluable, ensuring that performance is not compromised. Nike’s new DRI-FIT ADV technology promises to keep athletes cool and dry during gameplay.
The final stages of the jersey rollout involve extensive collaboration between Nike and the respective clubs to ensure the designs genuinely reflect the clubs’ identities and community connections, while fans eagerly await the unveiling of these stylish new kits.
