Maxwell Hairston, a cornerback from Kentucky, took center stage at the NFL Scouting Combine, promising an impressive display during testing and drills.
Hairston said, “From the [vertical jump] to the broad jump to the 40 [yard dash], the field work, too, that’s going to be the cherry on top…You need to get popcorn, probably a milkshake and some candy,” as he told CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala.
While many prospects have chosen to wait for their pro day, Hairston, a potential first-round pick in April’s draft, confirmed he was committed to showcasing his abilities in Indianapolis.
He pulled off notable performances including a 39.5-inch vertical jump (second among defensive backs) and a 10-foot-9-inch broad jump (third). His 4.28-second 40-yard dash is the fastest among all participants so far.
Hairston reached 24.25 miles per hour during the sprint, as outlined by Next Gen Stats, marking the fifth-fastest speed recorded at the combine in the last three years.
Hairston is currently rated as CBSSports.com’s No. 8 cornerback and the No. 67 prospect overall. However, discussions in Indianapolis suggest that he may ascend into the first round, given the limited corners with first-round potential this year.
He remarked on the significance of his appearances at the combine, saying: “This is what I train for. I am excited to put that on display, be able to show my athleticism, show my speed and just put on a show.”
CBSSports.com likens Hairston to veteran NFL cornerback Rasul Douglas. During the broadcast, a graphic compared Hairston to four-time Pro Bowler Denzel Ward.
“Maxwell Hairston is a boundary cornerback with a slight frame who has been exposed to zone and man coverage. Over the past two years, he has demonstrated impressive ball skills that could play to his advantage despite concerns regarding his size.”
The Detroit native opted to leave Kentucky after his junior season, joining fellow Wildcats Carrington Valentine and Dru Phillips in pursuing their careers early. Hairston noted his impressive track record, with six interceptions in the past two seasons, three of which were returned for touchdowns, and three forced fumbles.
The 2025 NFL Draft will occur from April 24-26 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. More draft insights are available at CBSSports.com, including regular updates on mock drafts and evaluation of eligible prospects.
