Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta Responds Positively After Serious Tackle in FA Cup Match Against Millwall

French forward Mateta suffered a worrying blow to his head but is reportedly recovering well after the incident.

In the FA Cup round of 16, Crystal Palace secured a 3-1 victory over Millwall, but the match was overshadowed by a dangerous tackle on their striker, Jean-Philippe Mateta. Early in the game, Mateta was forced to leave the field and was later taken to a hospital following a high challenge by Millwall’s goalkeeper, Liam Roberts. The incident drew a red card for Roberts after a VAR review, highlighting the severity of the tackle.

Mateta’s manager, Oliver Glasner, provided an update on his condition, stating, “He’s conscious and he’s in the hospital, but his ear obviously looks terrible. [It’s a] very serious injury, so of course we hope all the best for him and let’s see.”

Following the incident, Mateta shared a reassuring message on social media, saying, “Thank you for your kind messages. I’m doing well. I hope to be back very soon and stronger than ever. Well done guys for the great job today. I love you. JP.”

Mateta has been a pivotal player for Palace this season, contributing significantly with 12 goals and two assists in the Premier League. His presence in the upcoming fixtures is crucial for the team’s aspirations.

Steve Parish, the club’s chairman, criticized the tackle heavily, stating, “In all the time I’ve been watching football, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a worse challenge. If you’re kicking someone in the head then you don’t know what damage may have been done.”

Palace will anxiously await news on Mateta’s recovery as they prepare for the next round of the FA Cup.
