NFL Combine 2025: Draft Prospect Faces Challenges with Ankle Injury During Workouts

Gunnar Helm impresses despite battling a sprained ankle during crucial combine drills.

Texas tight end Gunnar Helm faced a challenging NFL Combine in 2025, achieving a 30-inch vertical jump and a 4.84-second time in the 40-yard dash, both placing him in the bottom three among tight ends. During his run, Helm twisted his ankle on a false start, yet continued to participate in all drills. An MRI later confirmed a sprain, but he’ll get a chance to showcase his speed again at the Longhorns Pro Day.

Here is a crazy Combine story: #Texas TE Gunnar Helm twisted his ankle on his false start on the 40-yard dash, then finished all the drills anyway. Said nothing until it was over. Had an MRI on Saturday to reveal a sprain. And will run again at his Pro Day. The pics are… yikes. pic.twitter.com/XaZQohyPZX

Helm’s performance in 2024 was noteworthy, as he significantly improved his stats, culminating in 60 catches for 786 yards and 7 touchdowns, leading all SEC tight ends in receptions and earning recognition as a John Mackey Award Semifinalist.

Helm is currently ranked as CBS Sports’ No. 4 tight end and No. 59 overall prospect.
