The NHL trade deadline is less than a week away, and the market is starting to heat up. The Florida Panthers made a move to bolster their blue line by acquiring defenseman Seth Jones from the Chicago Blackhawks, and there will certainly be more moves leading up to Friday’s deadline.
Jones is entering his 12th professional season and provides a veteran presence on the blue line for the reigning Stanley Cup champions. The 30-year-old defenseman provides offensive prowess, and the Panthers certainly could use all the help they can get after recently placing Matthew Tkachuk on LTIR.
Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche recently acquired defenseman Ryan Lindgren from the New York Rangers. Lindgren has spent all seven seasons of his NHL career with the Rangers, and he’s shown a knack for playing shutdown defense in his own end. Injuries have hampered him in the last year, but Lindgren should benefit from a lighter workload in Colorado. Fourth-line forward Jimmy Vesey accompanies Lindgren to Denver.
As the trade deadline inches closer, more deals will start to materialize. In fact, the Avalanche have already been pretty busy. Just last month, the Avs flipped Mikko Rantanen for Martin Necas in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Those aren’t the only big names that have been moved prior to the deadline. The Vancouver Canucks dealt J.T. Miller to the Rangers, and the San Jose Sharks dealt Mikael Granlund to the Dallas Stars. While those were all significant trades, there are still some impact players that will be available between now and the March 7 deadline.
