Zack Martin Announces Retirement, Teases Jerry Jones About Drafting Johnny Manziel

Zack Martin, a renowned player for the Dallas Cowboys, retires while humorously addressing team owner Jerry Jones's past draft decisions.

During his retirement press conference, Zack Martin shared a humorous moment with Jerry Jones regarding a draft-day decision from eleven years ago. Martin, who has decided to retire following an illustrious 11-year career likely leading to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, joked about how Jones was inclined to select then-Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel instead of him during the 2024 NFL Draft. After much consideration, Jones ultimately chose Martin as the 16th overall pick, which he now considers one of his best decisions.

Martin smiled and thanked Jones, saying, “Even though it took some convincing, thank you for believing in me.” Jones, reminiscing about the draft day, humorously noted the pressure from his son Stephen, stating, “I still have knots on my leg from Stephen kicking me under the table on draft day.”

Jones commended his decision to draft Martin, labeling it as the best right decision he has ever made. The comparison of Martin to legendary lineman Larry Allen further emphasized his significance in the franchise’s history. With accolades like being a Pro Bowler for ten consecutive seasons and a record number of All-Pro nods, Martin secured his legacy within the Cowboys and NFL.

Manziel’s career, in stark contrast, saw him selected later in the draft and ultimately have a fleeting presence in the league.
