Sophia Wilson and Michael Wilson Announce They're Expecting a Baby
USWNT player Sophia Wilson and her NFL husband, Michael Wilson, share the joyous news of their first pregnancy through social media.
U.S. women’s national team striker and Portland Thorns FC forward Sophia Wilson (formerly Smith) announced she and her husband, Michael Wilson, are expecting their first child. Their announcement came shortly after they celebrated their wedding. The couple shared their pregnancy news on social media.
“Life just keeps getting sweeter,” read the caption on their dual announcement on Instagram.
Wilson鈥檚 club, the Thorns, expressed congratulations across their social channels and stated they are proud to support her during this exciting new chapter.
“Our Number 9锔忊儯 +1 馃挄 We are overjoyed to share that @sophsssmith and her husband Michael are expecting their first child! The Thorns are proud to support her through this incredible new chapter 馃ス” - Portland Thorns FC
The 24-year-old striker was drafted by the Thorns in 2020 and made history as the first teenager selected in the NWSL Draft. She won the MVP award in 2022, achieving further accolades including the NWSL Championship MVP that same year, and took home the Golden Boot in 2023. Furthermore, she became the youngest player to reach 50 goal contributions in the league at just 23 years old.
With a contract extension signed in 2024 through 2025 and an option for 2026, the details of her contract are noteworthy as it includes a player option that deviates from the typical club or mutual options favoured in most contracts. In the meantime, the Thorns organization will need to adjust for the upcoming 2025 season, where players have already been sidelined due to injuries during the preseason.
U.S. national team head coach Emma Hayes has previously praised Wilson’s ability to adapt to different playing positions along the front line. During the 2024 Olympics, she was part of a powerful attacking trio called ‘Triple Espresso’ alongside Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman, contributing to an impressive 10 out of the 12 goals scored by the team. However, members of this attacking line have not participated in USWNT camps since the fall of 2024 due to rest and recovery considerations.
Hayes has underscored the importance of expanding the player pool leading into the 2027-28 cycle, with focus shifting to youth-oriented camps ahead of upcoming friendlies against Brazil. As the USWNT evolves, the Wilsons will prioritise their growing family before looking to return to the field.
