UFC 311 Highlights: Merab Dvalishvili Overcomes Umar Nurmagomedov to Retain Championship

In an intense showdown at UFC 311, Merab Dvalishvili displayed remarkable resilience, defeating Umar Nurmagomedov to successfully defend his bantamweight title.

Umar Nurmagomedov started strong against UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili, showcasing impressive skills in the early rounds. However, the fight turned as fatigue set in for Nurmagomedov at UFC 311 on Saturday, with Dvalishvili winning by unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) to retain the bantamweight title.

Dvalishvili required time to adjust before applying pressure on Nurmagomedov, who dominated the opening rounds. The challenger successfully defended against takedowns and landed quick strikes, momentarily staggering the champion. Dvalishvili said post-fight, “I’m training all the time; I am ‘The Machine.’ Even on short notice, through injuries, I fought.

With momentum shifting to Dvalishvili in Round 3, he sensed Nurmagomedov’s stamina dwindling. The champion’s confidence surged as he continued to push forward, ultimately allowing him to control the fight’s pace.

In a striking performance, Dvalishvili landed seven takedowns, marking the first time anyone has successfully taken down Nurmagomedov. With this victory, he broke the UFC record for most takedowns, surpassing George St-Pierre.

“I could retire today and die happy,” Dvalishvili stated.
