Jerry Jones Clarifies Cowboys' Free Agency Plans: 'Aggressive' is Not the Right Term
Jerry Jones discusses the Cowboys’ free agency strategy, stating that the term 'aggressive' doesn't fit their plans. This comes after differing comments from Stephen Jones about the team's approach.
The Dallas Cowboys have been surprisingly active leading up to free agency. They secured a deal with their pivotal free agent, Osa Odighizuwa, before the market opened. They have also restructured contracts for both CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott in advance of next week’s opening bell, giving them ample room to maneuver.
Currently, they possess over $54 million in cap space, ranking eighth in the NFL. This aligns with Stephen Jones’s assertion that they will be “selectively aggressive” during this offseason.
However, Jerry Jones does not believe that ‘aggressive’ is the appropriate term to describe their plans. “I don’t think aggressive is the right word,” Jones stated after Zack Martin’s press conference. He indicated that the Cowboys are looking for opportunities that would significantly enhance their roster.
In his convoluted explanation, Jones emphasized that the Cowboys do not have holes to fill and are not relying on free agency to address gaps, despite acquiring $54 million in cap space.
Jones’s statements indicate that the Cowboys, while preparing for free agency, may not be as willing to make significant splashes in the market. They haven’t gone big since signing players like Brandon Carr from the Chiefs over a decade ago, but they may consider re-signing important players such as Jourdan Lewis and Demarcus Lawrence or making strategic trades.
