Nikola Jokić Achieves Remarkable 30-20-20 Triple-Double in Overtime Win for Nuggets

Nikola Jokić makes NBA history with an unprecedented triple-double during the Denver Nuggets' overtime victory against the Phoenix Suns.

Nikola Jokić sat in front of his locker, calmly scrolling through his phone, seemingly unimpressed that 30 minutes earlier he had made NBA history.

The three-time NBA MVP achieved the league’s first 30-20-20 triple-double in the Denver Nuggets’ 149-141 overtime victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. Jokić scored 31 points, grabbed 21 rebounds, and dished out a career-high 22 assists.

“It’s not supposed to go that way,” Jokić said. “I was talking to Aaron Gordon and he said to me, ‘That was a quiet 30 points.’ I didn’t do anything special — [it] just seemed like everyone was in flow.”

Jokić matched his franchise record by completing his 29th triple-double of the season, achieving this milestone just 1:20 into the second half. He had recorded 10 points, six assists, and six rebounds by the end of the first quarter, totaling 13 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds by halftime.

The 30-year-old from Serbia is currently averaging a triple-double with 19 games left in the season, posting 28.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 10.6 assists per game, all ranking in the top three in the NBA.

“I can’t describe him, so don’t ask me to,” said Denver coach Michael Malone. “The guy is just an incredible player. When you are one of a kind in this league, with the tremendous history of this league, that says a lot. There are many good players, but Nikola, in my opinion, is just in a class all by himself.”

Jokić’s quick performance in overtime helped the Nuggets recover from a 21-point lead they had lost. He scored five points, assisted five times, and collected three rebounds during extra time, playing nearly 45 minutes in total.

Jokić began overtime with a 4-foot turnaround shot, assisted Jamal Murray for two baskets, and facilitated a dunk and layup from Christian Braun within 13 seconds.

“He’s just one of a kind,” Braun stated. “You’ll never see something like this again — ever. You’ll never witness a player who consistently performs as he does.”

On Friday, Jokić surpassed his previous high in assists of 19, set on February 24 against Indiana, by assisting Michael Porter Jr for a dunk that secured Denver a 139-130 lead with 1:18 remaining.

With 149 career triple-doubles, Friday marked the seventh occasion this season where Jokić achieved at least 15 points, 15 rebounds, and 15 assists, equaling Oscar Robertson’s season record. His 22 assists are the most recorded by a center in a single game, although he still trails Scott Skiles’ NBA record of 30 assists, a figure he is not focused on.

“I have different problems than that right now,” Jokić remarked.
