Stephen Curry Takes on Role as Assistant GM at Davidson College
NBA star Stephen Curry returns to Davidson College as an assistant general manager for basketball while continuing his NBA career.
Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has assumed the role of assistant general manager for Davidson College basketball teams. As a four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP, Curry becomes the first active player in major U.S. professional sports to take an administrative role with a college team while still playing for the Warriors.
Curry, along with his wife Ayesha, is establishing an eight-figure fund to support Davidson’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, as conveyed in a press announcement on Monday. They aim to provide guidance and shared experience to both programs.
He expressed his desire for Davidson’s scholar-athletes to compete at elite levels in college athletics, especially now that rules allow athletes to profit from their personal branding—opportunities absent during his playing years at the college from 2006 to 2009.
“The Davidson experience is top notch,” Curry stated. “My journey from Davidson to today proves I had the chance to excel in basketball, receive a quality education, and build strong networks through the alumni. I wish for talented and ethical student-athletes to have a similar experience.”
Chris Clunie, VP and Director of Athletics at Davidson, noted, “When our basketball teams succeed, they generate essential revenue and boost visibility for all our athletics programs.”
The Wildcats’ men’s basketball team currently holds a 16-15 record this season. Curry emphasized the importance of supporting incoming student-athletes so they do not have to settle for less than what they deserve in the collegiate landscape of athletics.
“With our guidance, student-athletes can achieve a four-year graduation, paving the way for success on and off the court,” Curry added.
Matt Berman will share the assistant GM duties with Curry, focusing on individualized support for every student-athlete, enhancing their Davidson experience.
