Alex Ovechkin Set to Approach Wayne Gretzky's Goal Record

A closer look at Alex Ovechkin's journey towards breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goal record.

Wayne Gretzky soon will have company in a significant category.
“The Great One” has several of the most renowned records in NHL history, including the most career goals at 894.
However, that mark is on the verge of being surpassed.
Let’s review the odds on whether Washington’s Alex Ovechkin will net his 895th goal this season and against which team this achievement will occur.

Alex Ovechkin to score 895th career goal this season: -210 (bet $10 to win $14.76 total)

Team Alex Ovechkin will score 895th career regular-season goal against:

  • Islanders: +300 (bet $10 to win $40 total)
  • Blue Jackets: +300 (bet $10 to win $40 total)
  • Hurricanes: +350 (bet $10 to win $45 total)
  • Blackhawks: +800 (bet $10 to win $90 total)
  • Penguins: +900 (bet $10 to win $100 total)
  • Bruins: +1200 (bet $10 to win $130 total)
  • Sabres: +1500 (bet $10 to win $160 total)
  • Wild: +2200 (bet $10 to win $230 total)

Gretzky retired in 1999, meaning his goal record of 894 has remained unbroken for 25 years. Nonetheless, he surpassed the previous record of 801 — held by Gordie Howe — in 1994, asserting his status as the all-time goals leader for three decades.
As of March 10, Ovechkin, age 39, has achieved 886 career goals over 1,475 games, while Gretzky reached 894 in 1,487 games.
The Capitals have 18 regular-season games remaining for Ovi to secure nine goals. Currently, he has 33 goals in 48 games this season.
In simpler terms, Ovechkin must score at least one goal every two games going forward to surpass the record.
It is predicted that Ovechkin will break the record against either the Islanders or the Blue Jackets, with matchups against New York occurring on April 6 and 15, and against Columbus on April 12 and 13.
Ovechkin, alongside Gretzky and Howe, is among the only three players in NHL history to achieve over 800 goals in the regular season. If he competes next season, Ovechkin will likely become the first player to ever score 900 regular-season goals.
Gretzky retains the record for all-time goals in both the regular season and playoffs, totaling 1,016, whereas Ovechkin has 958 combined regular-season and playoff goals.
