Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Aiming for $500 Million Deal in Free Agency After Declining Blue Jays Offer
Top MLB player Vlad Guerrero Jr. has set his sights on securing a monumental $500 million contract in the upcoming free agency. This follows his rejection of an offer from the Toronto Blue Jays that reportedly fell short of his expectations.
The Toronto Blue Jays were unable to finalize an extension with their star first baseman and pending free agent Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before his self-imposed deadline this spring. Reports are now emerging regarding the offer from the Blue Jays and Guerrero’s expectations.
Guerrero is pursuing a deal that spans 14 years and amounts to $500 million in current value, translating to about $35.7 million annually. In contrast, the Blue Jays proposed $500 million with major deferrals that would lower the present value to between $400 and $450 million, according to various sources.
“They had their numbers, I had my numbers,” Guerrero remarked in February after his deadline. “It’s just business, like I always say. Things happen. We’re all good.”
Last month, CBS Sports highlighted Guerrero as the top free agent for 2025, comparing his career stats to those of Miguel Cabrera. They estimated a potential contract of 12 years worth $456 million, averaging $38 million per year. Guerrero is expected to be among the highest-paid free agents.
Guerrero, only 25, enters the 2025 season with an impressive career slash line of .288/.363/.500 (137 OPS+) and a total of 160 home runs.
