Norwegian Olympic ski jumper champions Marius Lindvik and Johann Andre Forfang are now under formal investigation by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) amid allegations of enhancing their competitive edges through illegal alterations to their ski suits.
Norwegian officials discovered that these athletes modified their gear in an attempt to gain an unfair aerodynamic advantage during competition. Lindvik and Forfang have been suspended and disqualified from competing in upcoming events, including one scheduled for Thursday in Oslo.
The extent of the modifications involves adding an extra seam to the suits which significantly increases lift during jumps. Videos recorded by whistleblowers further implicated unauthorized modifications, particularly in the crotch area, allowing for better performance through added stiffness and improved surface area.
‘‘We regret it deeply; I feel terrible about the situation,’’ said coach Magnus Brevik, admitting to complicity among trainers in directing the changes. “We got carried away in our bubble.”
Both Lindvik and Forfang deny any wrongdoing, reinforcing their commitment to sport integrity by asserting they had no knowledge of the illicit adjustments. Lindvik previously brought home a gold medal during the Beijing 2022 Olympics, while Forfang shared in the glory of securing a team gold at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.
This revelations have stirred intense discussions regarding ethical practices within competitive sports, especially within the revered tradition of Norwegian ski jumping.
