The Washington Commanders celebrated a huge 45-31 upset win over the Detroit Lions in the NFC divisional round, marking their first NFC Championship game appearance since 1991 when they last clinched the Super Bowl.
However, the victory wasn’t without its costs. Head coach Dan Quinn announced that starting right guard Sam Cosmi will be sidelined for the remainder of the playoffs due to a torn ACL sustained during the game.
“Yeah, unfortunately, some tough news on Sam. He does have an ACL injury that will knock him out for the rest of the season,” Quinn mentioned Sunday. “So he’s been a significant part of what we’re doing, especially on the interior. It’s a big deal. The ballplayer and the man.”
On social media, Cosmi expressed his heartbreak and gratitude:
“Knocked down, but never knocked out. What a dream this season has been for me… I know our journey isn’t done yet. Go win it all boys. Commanders nation, I’ll see you next season. Trials to testimonies.”
Cosmi, a 2021 second-round pick, has been a constant in the lineup for the Commanders since the season’s start, transitioning from offensive tackle to guard. He boasts a 73.3 Pro Football Focus pass-blocking grade, ranking him 14th among guards in the NFL this season.
Trent Scott, a seasoned seven-year undrafted player, is poised to step in for Cosmi, aiming to help the Commanders as they pursue playoff glory.
