Knicks' Mikal Bridges Encourages Thibodeau to Reduce Starters' Minutes
Mikal Bridges, a key player for the Knicks, urges coach Tom Thibodeau to allow for more rest among starters as the playoffs approach.
If there’s one thing we know about a Tom Thibodeau-coached team it’s that he plays his starters significant minutes. Known for short rotations, his practice has led to criticism regarding the overuse of his star players. This season, three Knicks athletes are in the top 10 for minutes per game, with Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges leading the way.
While the Knicks maintain a strong 41-23 record and sit third in the Eastern Conference, Bridges has discussed with Thibodeau the need to reduce the starters’ minutes. “Sometimes it’s not fun on the body,” Bridges stated via the New York Post, emphasizing the idea that their bench players can step in.
Bridges and Hart average nearly 38 minutes of play a game, with Bridges leading the league in total minutes for the season. “We’ve got capable teammates who can share the load, which benefits our offense and defense,” he added.
Notably, Bridges has never missed a regular-season game in his seven years in the NBA, currently holding the longest active streak of consecutive games played in the league. As the playoffs approach, it’s crucial for Thibodeau to consider Bridges’ insights, especially with Brunson already sidelined due to injury.
