Mallory Swanson, a key player for the U.S. women’s national soccer team (USWNT) and Chicago Stars FC, will not participate in the team’s regular season opener on Friday. Head Coach Lorne Donaldson confirmed this news during the team’s match week schedule.
“Maybe [the club’s media relations department] can answer more, but to me, it’s a week-to-week thing. I’ll just give her space and let whatever happens happen,” said Donaldson.
Swanson has missed preseason activities, and details about her return remain unclear. The Chicago Stars announced her absence in January but have not provided updates on her recovery.
As one of the most dynamic players in women’s soccer, Swanson excelled last year, leading her team in scoring. Donaldson emphasized the team’s support for Swanson’s situation.
“The Chicago Stars organization stands ready to provide Mallory whatever support she needs, both on and off the pitch, and we will welcome her back whenever she is ready to return.”
While Swanson’s absence is felt, Donaldson insists that the team will adapt and focus on the players available for the season opener.
