Eminem Joins Detroit's Efforts for Upcoming WNBA Expansion Franchise
Eminem has teamed up with other luminaries to bolster Detroit's bid for a new WNBA team, further intensifying the competition among cities vying for expansion.
Detroit is renewing its efforts to secure a new WNBA franchise, and rapper Eminem has added star power to the city’s bid, according to reports from Sportico. The WNBA is slated to expand to 16 teams, and Detroit is in the running. Eminem joins a notable ownership group that includes former NBA athletes Grant Hill and Chris Webber, NFL quarterback Jared Goff, and General Motors CEO Mary Barra.
Having Eminem in the mix is expected to enhance Detroit’s chances, but the competition remains fierce. Over ten different ownership groups have submitted bids for expansion.
If successful, this would mark the second time the WNBA has set up in Detroit, previously home to the Detroit Shock from 1998 to 2009, which is now known as the Dallas Wings.
As the league continues to grow, the Golden State Valkyries are set to debut this year, becoming the thirteenth franchise. Toronto and Portland are also anticipated to join the WNBA in 2026.
