Yankees' Ace Gerrit Cole Faces Setback After Tommy John Surgery

Gerrit Cole has undergone surgery that will sideline him for the entire 2025 MLB season, marking a significant setback for the Yankees.

Gerrit Cole has undergone Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire 2025 MLB season, according to the team. The surgery included internal bracing, a relatively new procedure that improves the level of support on the ligament and can speed up recovery time. Cole first admitted last weekend that he was “concerned” about the elbow after feeling discomfort following his Feb. 28 start.

Cole’s Statement: “From the time I first dreamed of wearing the Yankees uniform, my goal has always been to help bring a World Series championship to New York. That dream hasn’t changed — I still believe in it, and I’m more determined than ever to achieve it.”

Cole’s injury will push back any hopes of a comeback into 2026, complicating his bid for the Hall of Fame as he falls short of career milestones. The Yankees will have to depend on a rotation that may now feature Max Fried, Carlos Carrasco, and Luis Gil among others.

Cole’s absence leaves a gap as the Yankees prepare for their season-opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.
