Indiana Appoints Darian DeVries as Head Coach Following Woodson's Departure

Darian DeVries is set to succeed Mike Woodson as Indiana's head coach after a brief tenure at West Virginia.

Darian DeVries will succeed Mike Woodson as Indiana’s head coach, the school announced on Tuesday. DeVries just wrapped up his only season at West Virginia and was also in the mix for the opening at Iowa, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander.

West Virginia posted a 19-13 (10-10 Big 12) record under DeVries before surprisingly being left out of the NCAA Tournament field on Sunday. However, the Mountaineers’ snub freed DeVries to pursue job opportunities at a time when other prominent names in coaching are preparing for the NCAA tournament.

“This is unquestionably one of the top jobs in America,” DeVries commented. “As someone who grew up in the Midwest loving basketball, I’ve always admired the IU basketball program for its championship-level success, tradition, and fan support. There is a deep desire to perform at the highest levels within both the Big Ten and the NCAA Tournament, and that’s a goal I share as a coach. I look forward to this opportunity and am eager to build a competitive roster.”

Prior to West Virginia, DeVries enjoyed a successful six-year stint at Drake, achieving a 150-55 record and leading Drake to three NCAA Tournament appearances.

At Indiana, DeVries, 49, will take over from Mike Woodson, who announced in February that he would step back from coaching duties after this season. Indiana also ended up 19-13 (10-10 Big Ten), losing to Oregon in the second round of the conference tournament. Despite reaching the NCAA Tournament during Woodson’s first two years, Indiana missed out on the tournament the last two years.

Scott Dolson, Indiana’s Athletic Director, praised DeVries’ credentials. “Darian articulated a vision for a championship culture that could consistently compete at the highest levels.”

Indiana’s selection of DeVries is considered a further setback for West Virginia. The Mountaineers’ NCAA Tournament exclusion has been described by Governor Patrick Morrisey as a “miscarriage of justice.”

With the dismissal of coach Bob Huggins after a troubled tenure, interim coach Josh Eilert held the position last season, only to be replaced by DeVries after a disappointing 9-23 record.

Behind DeVries’ reputation, his son Tucker was a star player at Drake and is considering following his father to Indiana after suffering from an injury this past season.
