LaVar Ball Discusses Life-Changing Foot Amputation Due to Severe Infection: 'I'm Tough to Kill'

LaVar Ball shares his harrowing journey of overcoming a life-threatening infection that led to his foot amputation, expressing gratitude for his sons' support.

LaVar Ball has bravely shared his experiences following a right foot amputation due to a severe infection. In an article penned for SLAM magazine, he recounted how a serious infection entered his bloodstream, stemming from complications related to diabetes, ultimately necessitating multiple surgeries and blood transfusions.

Ball expressed, “I had an infection on my foot that started spreading through my blood due to neglecting my diabetes. I ended up having to get my leg amputated. First, they cut off a couple of toes. Then they cut off my foot.” He revealed the lengthy and taxing process involved, noting that he underwent three surgeries and numerous blood transfusions.

Reflecting on his journey, he stated, “It made me think that maybe it’s time for me to shut it down.” Despite the loss of his foot, he acknowledged that his survival was a triumph, emphasizing that had he delayed seeking medical attention, the outcome could have been dire. Additionally, Ball credited his three sons—NBA players Lonzo and LaMelo, and Gelo, the artist behind the hit “Tweaker”—for their unwavering support during his health struggles.

“I’m the Big Baller,” he confidently remarked. “I’m tough to kill. But I must admit that my boys kept me rolling.”
