When a player is selected as a first-round pick in the NFL Draft, the corresponding team usually anticipates that player signing a second contract by the end of their rookie deal. However, this was not the case for Payton Turner and the New Orleans Saints, who chose him 28th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft from the University of Houston.
Turner faced challenges with injuries, limiting his appearances to just 15 games over his first three seasons, where he recorded merely three sacks from 2021 to 2023. After injury struggles, the 6-foot-6, 270-pound edge rusher showcased resilience, increasing his game participation to a career-high of 16 games in 2024, with two sacks.
Turner believes joining the Cowboys will enable him to realize his potential. He’s excited about the chance to play alongside All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, predictably enhancing his performance. “[The Cowboys] have different types of players with varying capabilities, allowing me to showcase multiple skills,” Turner stated.
He noted that team dynamics and coach Matt Eberflus emphasize aggressive penetration instead of strict gap control, which he experienced in New Orleans.
“I feel like [the injuries] hindered my progress, but playing 16 games proved that I can maintain my health. I’ve restructured my routine and made significant lifestyle adjustments, including dietary changes to mitigate inflammation caused by certain foods,” said Turner, affirming his commitment to improving his game.
He has embraced a lifestyle common among modern athletes, incorporating yoga and Pilates into his regimen, ensuring mobility remains at the forefront of his training. The Cowboys will assess whether the one-year, $2.5 million deal will yield significant returns, as Turner looks forward to showcasing his development in the upcoming season.
